Developments in Hybrid Blocked Isocyanate Technology

(Baxenden Chemicals to present at the European Coatings Conference in Berlin).

Blocked isocyantes allows the formulator to prepare room temperature stable one-component (1K) stovable coatings. Typical end-uses are in coil-coating of steel and automotive paint systems. Urethane bonds in the cross-linking moiety impart improved properties such as environmental resistance. Typical blocking agents used in commercial quantities are methylethylketoxime (MEKO) E-caprolactam (E-Cap) 3,5-dimethyl pyrazole (DMP) and diethyl malonate (DEM). Each blocking agent has advantages and disadvantages.

Combinations of blocking agents have been used in recent years to utilise the differential unblocking temperatures to give, for example, high build coatings. More recently the combination of DEM and DMP has been investigated and, due to the unique combination of chemistry, allows the formulator to achieve further flexibility in the preperation of 1K coatings.
