Baxenden Develops Material for Concept Moulding's FPS

Polyurethane technology expert, Baxenden Chemicals, is making a contribution to road safety by supplying materials for a new energy absorbing Frontal Protection System (FPS).

Manufactured by Concept Mouldings, a leading automotive parts supplier, the Frontal Protections Systems for SUVs and vans will save lives and reduce serious injuries, according to tests carried out at MIRA, the leading vehicle design, development and certification centre.  The tests, which were undertaken on typical 4 x 4 vehicles and vans currently available in Europe, showed that the FPS guards against minor bumps whilst improving pedestrian safety levels.

The Concept FPS was launched at the 2006 Motor Show under the Endura brand.  The system works by absorbing energy and protecting pedestrians from hard parts at the front of vehicles, such as the bonnet leading edge, radiator and engine, thus offering protection to the pedestrian in head, abdominal and leg areas.

The Frontal Protection System, ironically also previously known as a “Bull Bar” or “Nudge Bar”, utilises a composite core moulding of Baxenden’s energy absorbing rigid foam system together with a polyethylene rotacast insert.  The company’s polyurethane integral skin is then moulded around the outside of the composite core to produce the final item.
